This is an oil on cardboard painting created by Vincent Van Gough in 1887. The painting is one of nearly 40 self portraits that Van Gough completed. "Van Gough said he wanted to paint men and women with something of the eternal which the halo used to symbolize." I chose this painting because I loved how you can see each individual brush stroke that makes up the painting. I also think that his use of complimentary colors really makes the the man in the portrait pop fromt he darker background.
