"Olympia" by Manet was painted in 1863 and is oil on canvas. This painting is of a naked woman who is not painted in the likeness of the goddess but seems to be a prostitute. She has a flower in her hair and is laying in a very ornate room. She is accompanied by a fully clothed maid. I think that her pale skin and piercing eyes draw viewers into the painting. What was controversial about this work is that the woman is looking straight out at the audience despite her nakedness.
